( www.ecmos.com.tw ) page 9 of 13 2009/01/12 -2 detail description the ec49121 is a low-dropout linear regulator. the dev ice provides preset 1. 8v, 2.5v and 3.3v output voltages for output current up to 600ma. adjustable out put voltage and other mask options for special output voltages are also available. as illustrated in function bloc k diagram, it consists of a 1.175v band gap (fixed voltage type is 0.95v) reference, an error amplifier, a p-channe l pass transistor and an internal feedback voltage divider. the band gap reference for fixed voltage types is connected to the error amplifier, which compares this reference with the feedback voltage and amplifies the vo ltage difference. if the feedback voltage is lower than the reference voltage, the pass-transistor gate is pulled lower, which allows more current to pass to the output pin and increases the output voltage. if the f eedback voltage is too high, the pass transistor gate is pulled up to decrease the output voltage. the output voltage is feed back through an internal re sistive divider (or external resistive divider for adjustable output voltage type) connected to out pin. a dditional blocks include an output current limiter, thermal sensor, and shutdown logic. internal p-channel pass transistor the ec49121 features a p-channel mosfet pass tr ansistor. unlike similar designs using pnp pass transistors, p-channel mosfet require no base drive, which reduces quiescent current. pnp based regulators also waste considerable current in dr opout when the pass transistor saturates, and use high base-drive currents under large loads. the ec49121 does not suffer from these problems and consumes only 60 a (typ.) of current consumption under heavy loads as well as in dropout conditions. enable function en pin s t ar t s and s t ops t he regula t or . when t he en pin is swi t ched t o t he power o ff level , t he opera t ion o f all in t ernal circui t s t ops , t he build-in p-channel mosfet ou t pu t t ransis t or be t ween pins v in and v out is swi t ched o ff, allowing curren t consump t ion t o be dras t ically reduced . the v out pin enters the gnd level through the internal discharge path between v out and gnd pins . fast discharge function the ec49121 fixed type has f as t discharge func t ion on en pin disable . when user t urns o ff the device , i t s in t ernal pull low resis t or will discharge ou t pu t capaci t or charge . it ?ll avoid o t her device t o arise wrong mo t ions . simplified application circuit

( www.ecmos.com.tw ) page 10 of 13 2009/01/12 -2 output voltage selection for fixed voltage type of ec49121, the out put voltage is preset at an interna lly trimmed voltage. the first two digits of part number suffix identify the output voltage (see ordering information). for example; the ec49121-33 has a preset 3.3v output voltage. for adjustable voltage type of ec49121, the output volt age is set by comparing the feedback voltage at adjust terminal to the internal band gap reference voltage. the reference voltage v ref is1.175v.the out put voltage is given by the equation: current limit the ec49121 also includes a fold back current limiter . it monitors and controls the pass transistor?s gate voltage, estimates the output current, and limits the output current within 1.0a. thermal overload protection thermal overload protection limits total power dissipa tion of ec49121. when the junction temperature exceeds t j = +150c, a thermal sensor turns off the pass transi stor, allowing the ic to cool down. the thermal sensor turns the pass transistor on again after the juncti on temperature cools down by 20c, resulting in a pulsed output during continuous thermal overload conditions. thermal overload protection is designed to protect t he ec49121 in the event of fault conditions. for continuous operation, the absolute maximum operating junction temperature rating of t j = +125c should not be exceeded. operating region an d power dissipation maximum power dissipation of the ec49121 depends on the thermal resistance of the case and printed circuit board, the temperature difference between the die junction and ambient air, and the rate of airflow. the power dissipation across the devices is p=i out x (v in -v out ). the resulting maximum power dissipation is where (t j -t a ) is the temperature difference between the ec49121 die junction and the surrounding air, jc is the thermal resistance of the package chosen, and ca is the thermal resistance th rough the printed circuit board, copper traces and other materials to the surrounding ai r. for better heat-sinking, the copper area should be equally shared between the v in , v out , and gnd pins. dropout voltage a regulator?s minimum input output voltage differential , or dropout voltage, determines the lowest usable supply voltage. in battery powered syst ems, this will determine the useful end of life battery voltage. the ec49121 uses a p-channel mosfet pass transistor, its dropout voltage is a function of drain-to-source on-resistance (r ds (on) ) multiplied by the load current. ja a j ca jc a j max t t t t p ) ( ) ( ? = + ? = out on ds out in dropout xi r v v v ) ( = ? = 2 1 2 1 xr i r r x v v adj ref out + ? ? ? ? ? ? + = (see typical application schematic)
